Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Mount Kilimanjaro. It is located in central Kenya, near the equator, and is a prominent landmark in the country. Here are some key points about Mount Kenya:

  1. Elevation: Mount Kenya stands at an elevation of 5,199 meters (17,057 feet) above sea level. It is a stratovolcano that has been dormant for millions of years.
  2. National Park: The mountain and its surrounding area are protected within Mount Kenya National Park, which was established in 1949. The Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a diverse range of flora and fauna.
  3. Peaks: Mount Kenya has three main peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. Batian is the highest peak, reaching 5,199 meters (17,057 feet), followed by Nelion at 5,188 meters (17,021 feet). Point Lenana is the third-highest peak and is relatively easier to climb, with an elevation of 4,985 meters (16,355 feet).
  4. Climbing: Mount Kenya attracts climbers and hikers from around the world. Technical climbing skills are required to summit Batian and Nelion, while Point Lenana can be reached by a trekking route that doesn’t involve technical climbing.
  5. Biodiversity: Mount Kenya is renowned for its rich biodiversity. The lower slopes are covered in dense montane forest, while the higher elevations feature alpine vegetation and rocky terrain. The Park is home to numerous wildlife species, including elephants, buffalos, leopards, hyenas, and various bird species.

  8. Mount Kenya Trekking Routes: There are several trekking routes to explore Mount Kenya, including the popular Sirimon, Chogoria, and Naro Moru routes. Each route offers a unique experience and varying levels of difficulty.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi Sirimon gate to Old Moses Camp 3,300M ASL-9km.

  • Pick up from Nairobi and drive to Sirimon gate.
  • Heavy snacks prepared by the chef are served shortly after arrival followed by Lunch
  • The Sirimon Route is considered one of the easier routes to the summit, although it still requires physical fitness and acclimatization to the high altitude.
  • The trek usually starts at the Sirimon Gate, which is the starting point for several routes up the mountain. From Sirimon Gate, we proceed through the montane forest, heath, and moorland to reach Old Moses Camp. Old Moses Camp is the first campsite on the Sirimon Route and is situated at an altitude of about 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level. It serves as an acclimatization point for trekkers before they continue their ascent to higher altitudes.
  • The journey from Sirimon Gate to Old Moses Camp typically takes several hours, and advise trekkers to go at a moderate pace to allow their bodies to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountain, including diverse flora and fauna.
  • Take a short walk to familiarize yourself with the surroundings.
  • Return to the campsite
  • Bonfire moment.
  • Supper is served. Retire to sleep at your own convenient time.

Day 2: Old Moses Camp to Shipton Camp 4,300M ASL-15km.

  • It’s a beautiful morning, be sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise,
  • Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
  • Terrain: The trail starts through the moorland, characterized by rolling hills and heather. As you ascend, the landscape changes to rocky terrain with giant lobelias and senecios.
  • Duration: The hike usually takes about 5-8 hours, depending on your pace and acclimatization.
  • Stop at lunch point where the lunch will be served by our mountain chefs.
  • After lunch and some good rest, we start again following the main trail up to Shipton Camp from this point, it’s a gentle uphill to the Camp.
  • From the camp, if the mountain is not shy, reveals the two main peaks Lenana and Batian.
  • Later in the evening, early dinner is served, and we retire to our tents for a good rest and prepare for an early morning summit.

Day 3: Shipton Camp to Lenana peak 4,985M ASL-3km down to Mackinders Camp 5km 4300M asl

  • The Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 03:00 am. We hike for about four to six hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise.
  • Descend to Mackinder’s camp for lunch and spend the night there (4,300M ASL-5km).

Day 4: Mackinders camp to Naromoro gate 17kms

  1. After breakfast, begin a 5-hour descent via Teleki valley to Met Station (3.048M-10km), down to Naromoro gate 7 kms.
  2. The descent is gentle, and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery, which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp.
  3. Get ready for return journey to Nairobi.

DAILY ROUTINE

  1. Breakfast is between 7.30 am and 8.00 am, and departure from camp is at 9.00 am.
  2. There is a lunch at midday, tea, and biscuits around 4 pm, and dinner at 7 pm.
  3. Summit morning is different; tea and biscuits at 3:00 am and start hiking at around 4:00 am or 5:00 am.


The pace is slow and not forced at all. There is a rest at least once every hour and plenty of time to take photos, enjoy the view, and chat. When you arrive at the huts you will find your bags ready to collect. In the morning, please have your bags packed before breakfast.

All our food are fresh, and the meals are tasty, well-prepared, and served by our staff. Three-course meals with vegetables, fruit, salads, desserts, soups, popcorn, biscuits, and a complete range of beverages. We want you to enjoy your holiday on Mount Kenya, which means good food! Our cooks are all well experienced in Western tastes so expect as an example a soup starter with bread, tomato, and avocado side salad followed by chicken casserole with boiled potatoes and julienne carrots with a fresh fruit medley to finish with, and coffee and chocolate for supper.
